Gerund (-ing) ve Infinitive (to + V)

Bazı fiillerden sonra -ing, bazılarından sonra to + yalın fiil gelir; bazıları ikisini de alır ama anlam değişir. YDS bu ayrımı hem dilbilgisi hem cloze sorularında ölçer.

• -ing alan fiiller: avoid, enjoy, finish, consider, deny, admit, risk, suggest, involve, mind, postpone, delay, keep, practise, imagine, miss, resist, can't help.
• to + V alan fiiller: want, decide, plan, hope, expect, agree, refuse, fail, manage, afford, tend, seem, appear, promise, attempt, aim, intend.
• Nesne + to + V: allow, enable, encourage, force, require, persuade, advise, cause, urge, warn: The technology enables doctors to detect …
• Anlam değiştirenler: remember/forget doing (yapmış olmayı) – remember/forget to do (yapmayı); stop doing (bırakmak) – stop to do (yapmak için durmak); try doing (deneme amaçlı yapmak) – try to do (çabalamak); regret doing (yaptığına pişman olmak) – regret to inform (üzülerek bildirmek).
• Edattan sonra daima -ing: interested in learning, instead of waiting, by using, without being noticed. to edat olan kalıplarda da -ing: look forward to, be used to, object to, contribute to, be committed to, when it comes to.
• Mükemmel ve edilgen biçimler: having done, being done, to have done, to be done: He denied having taken the money.
• Sıfat + to V: easy to understand, likely to happen, the first to arrive. too … to (çok … -emeyecek kadar), … enough to (yeterince … -ecek kadar).

Karşılaştırmalar (Comparisons)

• Comparative: kısa sıfat + -er + than (faster than), uzun sıfat more + sıfat + than (more efficient than). Düzensizler: good-better-best, bad-worse-worst, far-further-furthest, little-less-least, many/much-more-most.
• Superlative: the + -est / the most + sıfat (+ in/of): the largest of all, one of the most important (+ çoğul isim).
• Eşitlik: as + sıfat/zarf + as; olumsuz not as/so … as; the same as; twice as … as (iki katı).
• Güçlendirme: comparative önünde much, far, even, a lot, considerably, slightly, a bit kullanılır; very kullanılmaz.
• Paralel artış: The more you practise, the better you become.
• less / fewer: sayılamayanla less, sayılabilen çoğulla fewer.
• Tuzak: Karşılaştırılan öğeler aynı türden olmalı: The climate of Spain is warmer than that of Norway (tekil), than those of (çoğul).
